(Lucia, Luzia) [died 304], virgin and martyr, suffered outrageous abuse because of the unwillingness to marry a dissolute young man, her desire to devote herself to God, and to distribute her fortune to the poor. For reasons which are not clear, her intercession is particularly sought by those suffering diseases of the eye. She is patron of cutlers, glaziers, laborers and the blind. Her feast is December 13.
