[Ruled 1003-970 B.C.], whose name means "œbeloved," was the son of Jesse, and was raised to be a shepherd, which taught him compassion and courage. The Prophet Samuel anointed David with oil, marking him as the next king. David became the armor-bearer of King Saul. He slew Goliath and became the new champion of Israel. Saul became jealous of his young rival and tried many times to kill him. David escaped and Saul was killed in battle. David became king and took Jerusalem and made it his capital. When the Ark of the Covenant was safely installed there, David danced before it. Troubles, sin and strife marked his reign, but, also, great military and political strength. David was a brilliant king, ambitious, tough and astute. He was also tender, poetic, a player of music and the author of the Psalms. He is a model of love, loyalty, humility and faith. He abdicated in favor of his son, Solomon. His feast is December 29.
