Virgin martyr. Nothing for sure is known of her life, but, according to legend, she was a rich and learned Christian woman who was carried off with many other women of Alexandria by the Emperor Maxentius in 305. The Emperor sent fifty philosophers to her to convince her to repudiate her faith. Instead, she converted them. He imprisoned her for refusing to marry him. She is shown with the instruments of her martyrdom, the wheel and the sword. She is the patron of apologists, attorneys, learning, students, librarians, philosophers, preachers, wheelwrights and young women. Her feast was November 25.
