[1887-1968] was born into a simple farming family. He was ordained a Capuchin priest in 1910. On September 20, 1918, he became the first priest to receive the stigmata. His five wounds were deep, bleeding and painful. He lost a cup of blood a day. His life was marked by long hours of prayer, sacrifice & austerity. He had a burning love of the Eucharist and of Our Lady. News of his holiness spread rapidly. He celebrated the sacrament of reconciliation for as many as sixteen hours a day and pilgrims would wait for weeks for him to "œconfess" them. His tomb is the most frequently visited shrine in Europe. His feast is September 23.
