(Rue, Ruthia, Rut, Ruta, Rutka) [12th Century B.C.], beloved mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. A famine in Bethlehem forced Naomi, her husband and two sons to go to Moab. Her sons married Moabite women. First, Naomi's husband died and then her two sons, leaving Ruth a widow also. Naomi prepared to return to Israel alone, but Ruth refused to let her go alone, saying, "œDo not ask me to abandon or forsake you! For wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God." In Bethlehem, Ruth worked in the wheat fields of Boaz, married him and bore him a son, Obed, father of Jesse, father of King David. Naomi means "œpleasantness" or "œmy joy." Ruth means "œcompanion" or "œfriend."
